Conservation Statement
Our environmental philosophy is creative reuse of materials. Local industries have donated scrap materials, usable machinery and computers to The Crucible's Material Reuse Warehouse, providing students with class materials rather than packing landfills.
The Crucible is NOT a drop-off center, please check out earth911.com for a center near you.

Solar Power
Since May 2006, Crucible’s 56,000 square foot studio has used the sun’s energy to generate much of the electricity we use. During the day, the solar panels absorb sunlight, creating direct current (DC) electrical power that is converted to alternating current (AC) electricity by six inverters. This power is either used by The Crucible or fed back into PG&E’s electrical distribution system.

10 Things we do at The Crucible
1. Electrical Usage Reduce electrical grid usage with solar panels on our roof and use energy efficient lighting throughout the studio
2. Reduce, Reuse, and Compost Repurpose discarded materials for art classes like: • Scrap metal for Welded Sculpture • Bottles and window glass for Art Glass • Old electronics for Kinetics and Robotics classes
We use CASS for our metal supply and as our recycler for metal and our sawdust. We also have a compost bin for all our garden scraps.
3. Recycle and Buy Recycled Recycle paper, cans & bottles, batteries and electronic waste from our office, studios and shop areas. Strive to print our materials locally, on recycled paper with eco-friendly inks.
4. Reusable Chic Use biodegradable flatware (yep, made of cornstarch), plates, and supplies at our events
5. Smart Commuting The Creation of Die-Moto, the world’s fastest bio-diesel motorycycle, to bring attention to GREEN high performance and a cleaner burning fuel.
6. People Power Encourage use of bicycles through our bike programs and provide bike parking at events
7. Shop Responsibly Use local food and supply vendors and support local artists. We also save desks and cabinets from old office building to use in our office and studio.
8. Save Water We offer filtered water at our shop sink to refill water bottles.
9. Jettison Junk Mail and Go Paperless We offer our Course Catalog and Class Schedule on-line for download, for a paperless option.
10. Green Garden Practice water-efficient gardening with containers, drought-hardy plants and xeriscapes.
