FOUNDRY

Casting metal is a 6,000 year-old process still used today in both manufacturing and fine art. In a foundry, metals are placed into a crucible and transformed by melting them, pouring the molten metal into a mold, and removing the mold material or casting after the metal has cooled and solidified. The most common metals used in fine art are aluminum, bronze and cast iron. In The Crucible’s entry-level foundry classes, you will learn the chemistry and basic steps that go into making a piece of cast metal, while advanced classes further explore myriad intricacies of casting and metal finishing.

CLASSES

Foundry Fundamentals

Entry-level class
Begin your exploration of foundry work with this hands-on overview of the steps involved in casting metal. This class introduces foundry processes, including wax working, ceramic shell, sand moldmaking, metal casting, and metal finishing. You will use the lost-wax casting method (which begins with sculpting in wax) and the sand casting method (which uses a mold made from sand). You will help pour molten metal and will complete several cast-metal pieces, which can be sculptures or utilitarian objects.

Bronze Casting: Ceramic Shell Process
Entry-level class
Ceramic shell is a mold material used in the lost wax casting method. The ceramic shell process begins with a wax sculpture. You’ll learn basic wax-working techniques, as well as how to create ceramic shell molds. Finally, you’ll cast your piece in bronze or aluminum. The class will also cover basic metal finishing.

Sand Casting in Bronze & Aluminum
Entry-level class
In this class, you can turn your creations into cast metal. Working with resin-bonded sand, you’ll learn the basics as you build your own molds. As part of a casting team, you’ll have the exhilarating experience of pouring molten bronze or aluminum. After your casting cools, you’ll open your mold and finish your piece. Bring a found object or a sculpture that’s smaller than a breadbox. The sculpture can be made of wax, clay, foam, or wood.

Introduction to Bell Casting 1
Entry-level class
In this class you will learn both wood turning and sand casting. You will create a 6” diameter bell pattern of your design from turning wood. Then using those patterns in a sand casting technique to cast your bell.

Cupola Iron Casting (Yearly) **Special Fire Arts Festival Class**
Entry-level class

This workshop takes you from making a mold in sand to completing a finished iron sculpture. You’ll learn mold construction and preparation while building your own sand mold using resin-bonded sand. You’ll learn the steps required to prepare for the cupola iron casting pour. In the final and exhilarating event, you’ll prepare iron and coke charges, have an opportunity to operate the cupola, and pour molten iron into your own sand mold.

Patinas Made Easy (Biannually)
Entry-level class
The right patina can be the essential finishing touch for your metal project. This hands-on, weekend workshop teaches a variety of methods to give a patina to bronze and introduces other coatings and applications for these metals. Please bring some small pieces to patina. You’ll be able to experiment on small test samples before working on your own pieces.

Youth Adventures in Sand Casting
(Youth)
Entry-level class
Ages 12 - 18

In this introduction to foundry processes, you’ll turn your ideas into cast-metal sculptures as you learn the basics of metal casting. You will make a sculpture, create a mold in resin-bonded sand, and then watch as molten aluminum is poured into your mold. When your piece has cooled, you’ll open your mold to your very own finished sculpture!

Exploring Moldmaking (Moldmaking)
Entry-level class
Get an excellent overview of the moldmaking process. In this class you will explore a variety of materials and techniques and experiment with molding and casting. Learning about the limitations and possibilities of moldmaking as well as how it’s related to other areas of study like metal and glass working. Personal projects are welcome, but there will be a limit to project size.

Casting Wax to Silver Jewelry (Jewelry)
Entry-level class
Learn the lost wax casting process, an age-old sculptural jewelry-casting process that involves creating a positive model out of wax, using that model to make a mold, then using the mold to cast a form in metal. You’ll carve, cast, and finish at least one pendant or ring in silver, and experiment with different types of wax and their working qualities as you learn the techniques and tools of this process. Bring a your sketches and ideas for jewelry.
