Summer 2014 Classes

How Our Pricing Structure Works

A Helpful Way
to Think About Cost

Divide the tuition by the number of hours. For instance, Blacksmithing I tuition is $335, and it meets for 15 hours total. That’s $22 per hour, plus studio fees (less than $5 per class session in this case), and the $50 non-refundable registration fee.

The Crucible is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts school. We are funded through a combination of grants, donations, studio rental fees, workshops, fabrication projects, non-class programming, and revenue from youth and adult classes.

We do our best to hold down the cost of classes, but must meet basic overhead costs including fuel & electricity, our mortgage, insurance, and administrative overhead. The price of a class includes tuition, studio fees and a non-refundable $50 registration fee.

This is the cost of the educational experience of the class – the time and planning by faculty and staff and your creative experience as a student.

Studio Fees

Set costs we cannot defray for the use of the Crucible’s studios such as gas, electricity, and tools. We provide all materials for classes, with the exception of a handful as noted in the catalog.

Each class fee includes a non-refundable registration fee of $50. You may withdraw from a class for any reason up to seven days prior to the start of the class. You will receive a refund minus the $50 registration fee. The $50 registration fee is non-refundable, unless The Crucible cancels the class.

The Crucible reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment at any time, and this does happen from time to time. If we cancel your class, we will issue you either a full credit or a full refund, including the refund of your $50 registration fee. You may apply your credit toward another class if space is available, or hold onto your credit for future use.

You may withdraw from a class for any reason up to seven days prior to the start of the class. You will receive a refund minus the $50 registration fee.

To withdraw from a class call (510) 444-0919, Mon- Thurs., 10 am to 6 pm, or Friday, 10 am to 2 pm, and you will receive a confirmation code for your withdrawal. There is no refund if you withdraw from a class less than seven days before the first class meeting.

Member Discounts

Crucible members automatically receive early registration privileges and a 10% discount on tuition, which can be as much as 25% during some special events. Member discounts are not applicable to tasters and not combinable with other offers.

To “inspire creativity in everyone” The Crucible also reserves funds to provide scholarships to under-resourced youth who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in Crucible classes and programs. Our pricing structure allows us to give opportunity to impact our community for the better.

We are a heavily volunteer-driven organization and have an active program that allows volunteers to earn credit toward discounts on class tuition. Learn more here.
