Fire has always been a powerful, mythic element for humans. It has played a significant role in our history and molded our very way of life. Fire performers have a deep respect for the flame and know that by no means do they ever have total control over it. At The Crucible, you can learn to safely manipulate fire’s captivating power, and learn to make and use various tools like poi, fire staffs, hula-hoops and the fire rope dart.

Art of Fire Dancing I (Poi)
Learn the ancient art of Maori fire dancing. Used by these warriors to increase strength and skill, poi (which means ball) is a form of juggling that uses balls on ropes swung in circular patterns. While learning to spin poi without fire, you will also gain knowledge about the history of the art form and it’s origins. On the last day of class, students will spin with fire!
Art of Fire Dancing II (Poi)
Learn how to integrate movement with your poi spinning. After this class, your body and your poi will work together as one and you will know many new tricks. This five-week session highlights choreography, movement, and work with music. NOTE: You must have your own poi. PREREQUISITE: Art of Fire Dancing I (Poi)
Fire Eating I

Fire Hula Hoop II
This class takes you beyond the hoop dance fundamentals, and helps you add more complex hoop moves to your basic foundation. You will learn isolations, stalls, tosses, and how to move the hoop in different planes on your body and at varying levels. This class will teach you how to have more fluidity in your hoop dance, help you explore new moves, and see how to combine them with smooth transitions. You will learn how to achieve more freedom of moment in your moves, enabling you to explore expressive dance elements with complex tricks. We will hoop with fire twice during the ten-week series. Bring your own hoop or work with one provided. PREREQUISITE: Fire Hula Hoop I
Fire Rope Dart
Fire performers worldwide have embraced this ancient Chinese martial art form for its quickness, grace and unpredictability. The tool is simple — a long rope with a flaming wick at one end — but using it demands complex movements that call on your entire body. You will learn the basics, including foot, neck, elbow and shoulder movements, plus fire safety and how to construct your own fire dart. And during the last class, students have the opportunity to actually work with fire!
Fire Staff I
Learn the fundamentals of spinning a single fire staff! We will focus on how to align body movements with the staff, in order to create a fluid, connected, captivating dance. Each student makes a practice staff to take home.
Whether you’ve fooled around some with juggling or even if you are a complete beginner, come learn directly from one of the world’s top jugglers! Kyle Johnson will give you the knowledge and skills to become the life of any party. (No fire in this class.)
