VERNON THEISS
Vernon Theiss is a jeweler, metalsmith, educator and designer. His work is experimental, sculptural, technical, conceptual and detailed. He exhibits internationally and nationally. Vernon received his MFA from Boston University-PIA Program and BFA from Washington University-St. Louis.

JEREMY SCIDMORE
Jeremy earned a B.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and later returned to SAIC to study Arts Administration and Policy. His experience runs the gamut of studio glass arts practice, employing techniques such as kiln forming, glassblowing, flame working, glass printmaking and neon. He has maintained studios in each of these glass practices and taught extensively nationally and internationally. Currently, Jeremy is a Studio Manager and the Glass Casting & Coldworking Department Head at The Crucible.

MICHAEL STURTZ
Crucible Founder Michael Sturtz has been an innovative teacher, builder and facilitator for more than 20 years. His ability to approach any creative challenge with tenacity and innovation has made him a leader in the world of art, design and theater, opening new frontiers for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Michael teaches at Stanford’s d.school, where he spearheaded and then directed the Reinventing Theater project for two years. Michael is currently the executive director of The Stanford Creative Ignition Lab @ Autodesk.

BYRD PAPPAS
Byrd Pappas is a freelance, free-spirited welder and blacksmith, and is a studio manager at The Crucible. Byrd lives in Oakland and has recently worked on other projects with the art collective Meow Wolf, which just opened a permanent interactive sculpture museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico called “The House of Eternal Return.” Byrd’s work is ever evolving, growing and making beautiful objects out of metal.

CARLA HALL
Carla Hall is the principal of Red Frog Metal Design. A professional metalworker with a background in blacksmithing, welding and metal fabrication, her work is representative of contemporary blacksmithing. Carla’s work has been commissioned by architects and interior designers, and has been shown in galleries throughout the United States. She is The Crucible’s Education Director.

Kier’s work in glass has a strong foundation in production studio technique but has evolved into a current interest in stretching, elongating and altering more traditional shapes into fluid non traditional vessel forms. Kier finds inspiration from the architectural metal works of the French Art Nouveau period of the early twentieth-century and its relation to fluid nature of molten glass.

JOHN LEWIS
Lewis founded the first private hot glass studio in California and received his MA in design in 1970. His early work in blown glass led to an interest in glass casting. With the help of an NEA grant, he built an experimental facility to explore the possibilities of cast glass. At his state-of-the-art casting studio in Oakland, Lewis designs and produces cast glass sculpture, tables, vessels, and site specific architectural projects. He has completed numerous commissions for private and corporate clients and is represented internationally by galleries.

ROB NEHRING
With a BFA in inter-arts that included theater, dance and sculpture, Rob Nehring is now the sole proprietor of Rusty Noodle Studios. An accomplished artist, Rob’s sculptures are in galleries and part of private collections throughout the United States. The whimsical characters featured in Rusty Noodle Studios are created from 99% recycled materials. Through found scrap materials, Rob lets the materials dictate what they will become.

GREGG HESSEL
Gregg Hessel has spent years developing the techniques and custom tools that allow him to hand forge copper and produce museum quality candlesticks. Gregg has developed many of his own tools and techniques, inspired mainly by the wrought iron and jewelry traditions. Hessel’s hand-wrought copper candlesticks are produced in his studio just outside of San Fransisco, and each is engraved on the underside with the Hessel Studios stamp.

A teacher, traveler and full time ceramicist with an MFA from Indiana University (1999), and BA from Penn State (1992), Assad’s work is in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Cafesjian Center for the Arts (Yerevan, Armenia), The Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University Museum, and The Penn State Fulbright Scholar Collection. She was named, “Ceramic Artist of the Year,” in 2012 by Ceramics Monthly.

Lance began working with glass at Palomar College in 2002 and in 2010 he received a BFA in Glass from California College of the Arts. Lance has attended workshops at the Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, Eugene Glass School, and the Appalachian Center for Crafts. He is currently the Glass Studio Manager at California College of the Arts and serves on the faculty of The Crucible.
