This class explains the physical occurrences you observe in your classes at The Crucible. Examining these phenomena at the atomic level will help you understand metals and materials. There is no math, labs are incorporated into the class and there are no prerequisites. Everything you need to know to demystify the behavior and use of materials is taught in class.

Earn Your Ham Radio License In Just Two Days!

If you've been to the Black Rock Desert, you know how rugged and desolate it is: no paved roads, no one else around for miles, and limited cell phone coverage. Yes, part of the reason we go to the playa is to be out of contact with the rest of the world... but when your truck is stuck in the mud, night is falling, and you haven't seen another moving vehicle within waving distance for hours, being out of contact suddenly doesn't look so good.

Amateur Radio to the rescue! For years, Amateur Radio has been the only reliable means of long-distance communication in the Black Rock Desert, and will likely remain the best option well into the future. And with the repeater systems installed on several mountaintops overlooking the desert, you can talk anywhere in the Black Rock area (and beyond!) with just an inexpensive hand-held radio -- and your Ham license, of course! Whether you're calling for help, staying in touch with the rest of your group, or meeting new playa friends on the air, Amateur Radio works when all else fails.

In the first day of this two-day course, you will:
- learn what you can do with Amateur Radio, both on-playa and off;
- understand how to use it in both emergency and non-emergency situations;
- be introduced to the wide array of services available to Ham operators on the playa;
- get valuable tips on purchasing and programming your first radio(s)

Then, on the second day, you'll take the "Ham Cram," a half-day review of all 396 multiple-choice questions in the "Technician Class" license question pool, followed by an official FCC Amateur Radio license exam. The Technician license is the entry-level ham radio license, and the technician license exam is made up of 35 of the questions from the pool. You must answer 26 (74%) of the questions correctly to pass. The "Ham Cram" format leverages short-term memory techniques to consistently achieve pass rates of 85% and higher.

The exam is administered by a team of Volunteer Examiners (VEs) accredited by the ARRL, the national association for amateur radio. There is a mandated testing fee of $15 per exam taken, payable in cash or by check just before the exam. This testing fee is not included in the tuition or materials fees for the class. If you don't pass the exam the first time, you can take another version of the exam immediately by paying the $15 testing fee again.

What to bring to the Sunday Ham Cram session:

Please bring a lunch with you on Sunday, as we will be working straight through from the question review to the testing session, to make sure that the information is still fresh in your mind for the exam.

You must present a legal photo ID, such as a drivers license or passport, to take the exam. If you don't have a photo ID, please call The Crucible office at 510.444.0919 for information on how to satisfy the identification requirements without a photo ID.

If you are a U.S. citizen or national, or a permanent resident, you must have a Social Security Number (or other federally-issued Taxpayer Identification Number) to complete the required FCC paperwork.

You may want to bring a small calculator -- but if it's a scientific calculator the VEs will probably make you remove the batteries and wipe the memories. Note: you cannot use a cell phone or smart phone (iPhone, Android, etc.) as a calculator.

And of course, remember to bring a personal checkbook or cash to cover your testing fee(s).
