Glass Flameworking I

This fundamentals class in flameworking will teach you the basics of transforming and manipulating glass over a bench-top torch. You'll use an oxygen-propane torch to melt borosilicate glass to mold and shape it into beautiful glass marbles, sculptures, ornaments, and more! This class introduces you to the tools and equipment of glass flameworking and covers a variety of techniques including color pulling and application, sculpting, cane making, frit application and marble making.

Glass Flameworking II
Prerequisite: Glass Flameworking I
In this intermediate course, we expand on the fundamentals and investigate the intricacies of borosilicate glass flameworking in more involved projects and contemporary designs. In addition to learning more progressive solid glass techniques, you will learn to use glass tubing to make blown glass perfume bottles and vessels, as well as color application to blown glass pieces, and annealing hollow form pieces.

This advanced class will build upon the techniques learned in Glass Flameworking and Continuing Techniques in Glass Flameworking. Adventures in Soft Glass: Finding Your Inner Monster
Prerequisite: Glass Flameworking I or Glass Beads I
Extend your glass experience by learning techniques in creating open hollow forms. Monster expert Ralph McCaskey takes you on a journey in soft glass, sharing secrets to creating facial expressions with a focus on eyes. A brief historical look at monsters provides a good starting point for your project. The class culminates with embellishments, such as feathers, and electroforming techniques.

This two-day fundamentals workshop is a great way to enter the world of art glass. The techniques of fusing and slumping offer new possibilities for creating with color and form. This two-day workshop is a continuation of Fundamentals of Glass Fusing and Slumping 1. Projects will include a large plate (10”-12”), slumping into drop-out ring molds and “frit-casting” into clay molds.

Free Flow Pattern Bars
Prerequisite: Glass cutting experience
Master the magical techniques of free flow glass pattern bars. You will learn to create pattern bars, cut them into desired lengths, put them into constructed molds and melt them into spectacular organic and/or symmetric forms. You will learn how to calculate the amount of glass to fill open-faced molds, alternative firing schedules and annealing specifics. The final pieces can stand alone as art or be slumped into luxurious trays or bowls. Included is an introduction to the glass cold working tile saw, belt sander and sand blaster to clean and polish your work. The results are truly amazing.

Recycled Glass Sculpture
Entry-level class
This fast-paced, five-week class explores techniques for using broken window glass and post-consumer bottle glass to form sculptural pieces, tableware and architectural elements. Each week's session introduces a different approach to using glass: combining colors by fusing glass in the kiln, changing the shape of resulting pieces using molds, using the glory hole to re-form recycled bottles and working with the cold glass. You will learn glass chemistry, coloration and firing temperatures for each application.

This workshop uses fusible glass powders to create "drawn" or "painted" images that are kiln fired on multiple layers of glass. The layers are then fused into a single block of glass revealing a picture or design with dimensional qualities.

Pot Melt Glass Workshop
Entry-level class
Create unique glass art using tested-compatible glass melted in a flower pot in the kiln. This process heats scrap glass to 1,650˚ F, allowing it to flow onto the kiln shelf, forming a "puddle" of multi-colored glass. You will cut and grind this unique glass into a shape that is then re-fused into a final finished art piece.

Reactive Glass Workshop

This workshop shows how you can use Bullseye glass to create special effects after kiln firing. Differing glass chemistries, when combined, cause reactions that change the fired glass's color and appearance. Adding metal foils further alters the look of the glass. Kiln-Casting Glass Sculpture I

Learn the ancient art of lost-wax glass casting. You will sculpt a small wax form and use it to make a mold for a one-off reproduction. This class teaches techniques for working with wax, plaster/silica mold making, de-waxing the mold, the kiln firing process, firing schedules and annealing the glass. You can complete two to three finished projects and learn basic cold working techniques.

Kiln-Casting Glass Sculpture II: Reverse Relief
Entry-level
Bas Relief, a sculpting technique, is traditionally carved into the top surface of stone or wood to produce low-relief sculpture. In this Reverse Relief class, the relief is created on the back-side of a clear slab of glass and viewed through the flat front-side. This is achieved by carving on a slab of plaster/silica and melting clear glass over the top. No experience needed for carving or sculpting for this class and all skill levels welcome. Students will also learn basic coldworking skills.

Kiln-Formed Recycled Glass Tableware

The goal of this class is to make a dinner ware set of four, including large plates, salad plates, desert plates and coasters, by repurposing and re-melting window and plate glass. You will have the coice of making your own 12" max custom molds out of clay or fiber or use the 12" and 8" clay provided. Old window glass and colors for the window glass will be included in the class, but you are welcomed to bring in your own found glass for experimentation and possible use.

Fusing & Slumping Independent Projects

Explore techniques and expand on concepts learned in Fusing I and Fusing II. Independent Projects provides time, tools, firing kilns, instruction and some glass for special projects. Students are allocated two 8”x8” sheets of glass per week for projects. Each student will meet for an hour with instructor in advance to plan and develop projects. Participants will be required to plan and agree on mutually beneficial firing programs.

Glass Blowing Immersion Workshop

With heat from the belly of a 2000 degree furnace, you will transform the shape of molten glass using traditional tools such as marvers, jacks, paddles, straight and diamond shears, optic molds, wood blocks, as well the paper, the punty and the blowpipe. You will manipulate and shape hot glass into paperweights, flowers, drinking vessels, bowls, bottles, sculptures, small vases and more. In a supportive and encouraging environment, you will be taught glass blowing theory and principles including rotation, gravity, form, control, thermal stress, bit work, annealing, color theory and application. Fundamental techniques such as gathering, marvering, transferring, necking, trimming, sculpting, attachments, wraps, as well as, bench and blowing technique will be taught to expand and refine your skills.
