CERAMICS CLASSES

Clay is a material rich in history and possibilities for art making. Ceramics at the Crucible offers a unique place to learn the different building techniques of pinching, coiling, using slabs, in addition to press molds and slip casting with plaster molds. Students will also have the opportunity to explore different glazing techniques in low fire, high fire, and other firing alternatives such as raku firing. From functional tableware and vessels to sculpture and installations to mixed media, the possibilities in ceramics are endless for both youths and adults.

CLASSES


 

Ceramics I
Entry-level

In this introductory level class, students will be able to explore making sculptural and functional forms in clay. We will cover all the traditional hand building and surface treatment techniques, as well as push these boundaries and cover more unconventional methods. After this class, students will have a solid foundation in working with clay, as well as be able to apply these skills to other three - dimensional work and materials.


 

Ceramics II: Sculpture & Surfaces
Prerequisite:  Ceramics I

Designed for intermediate to advanced students, this class will go beyond basics to explore all the various surface treatments and alternative firing techniques in ceramics. Through understanding all the different possibilities in clay, from using terra sigillata to raku firings, students will be able to further use the material to express their individual visions.  


CeraMix: Mixed Media & Sculptural Clayworking
Entry Level

This class is ideal for those wanting to explore clay as a sculptural material for the first time and for artists interested in incorporating clay into their body of work.  There will be a strong emphasis on hand building techniques (slabs, coils, etc.), mold making with plaster, and different surface treatments, with traditional glazes and non-traditional approaches.  We will discuss how to incorporate other materials, such as fabrics, metal, and wood into our ceramics.


The Figure in Clay
Entry-level

This is the ideal class for students interested in sculpting the human figure. While focusing on human anatomy and proportion, students will be encouraged to push the limits of their imagination. After this class, students will have a solid understanding of the human form, as well the ceramic construction techniques to build their visions. Prior experience with clay is preferred, but not necessary. There will be a live model. 



Clay Animal Bowl Parent & Child 3-Hour Taster
Entry-level. Child may be 4-11 years of age.

In this 3 hour class, parent and child pairs will create "animal bowls." An animal bowl is a bowl that is shaped like an animal! Students will learn basic hand building techniques to sculpt their animal bowls, and then use underglazes to paint them. Based on interest and time, we can also incorporate using the potter's wheel. These unique pieces will be food safe.


Ceramics Lab
Entry-level

Come play with clay! The Crucible is one of the only places to offer a drop in lab time for people who simply want access to a ceramics studio and tools to work on their own with clay. Students may purchase clay from the Crucible for $12, or bring their own with permission from instructor. We will also have occasional guest visitors and demos.  Members may sign up for the whole series, and anybody can drop in on any Monday for $15.
