The Crucible couldn’t exist without the amazing community of donors, students, members, volunteers, faculty, artists, patrons, staff, board, locals, and arts lovers who collaborate throughout the year to sustain one of the area’s most unique creative institutions. In a year, 150 celebrated faculty and industrial arts experts teach over 1,000 classes and workshops to more than 5,000 students; local companies take part in more than 100 team building events; and our award-winning youth program serves over 4,000 youths in classes, camps, workshops, and outreach programs.
Meet Our Community
Community is something we think about and talk about a lot. We mean it in different ways… Those who work, learn, and teach at The Crucible. Our immediate West Oakland neighbors. The larger artist community that we are embedded in. People of all ages and backgrounds, hailing from throughout the Bay Area and beyond, have found a home in our studios. And should you wish to join us, there is always a place for you here.
Our 150+ instructors bring an energizing combination of real-world experience and passion to each class. These experts, industry professionals, and emerging and acclaimed artists teach at The Crucible because they enjoy the unique atmosphere and the ability to help students gain practical, working knowledge of the field that they love.
A dedicated staff of 40 people keeps The Crucible running. In every office position, we’re using our unique talents and experience to build a sustainable and thriving organization, bringing meaning to our work and the positive, creative force of art into our community. Together with the Crucible community, we continue to grow this one-of-a-kind industrial arts education center.
As a non-profit, we depend heavily on the unique skill-sets of our diverse volunteer force. Our volunteer pool—around 150 individuals active at any given time—helps power nearly every aspect of what we do, from the office to the studio floor, from the youth program to our renowned events. Volunteers earn discounts on classes, of up to 50% on tuition and membership costs, as well as the satisfaction of being an integral part of one of the nation’s top industrial arts facilities.
Students & Members
Our classes are designed for everyone, from beginners with no prior experience to advanced makers, artists, and tradespeople. With classes in welding, blacksmithing, neon, glass blowing, ceramics, jewelry, robotics, and more, The Crucible provides hands-on arts education to over 5,000 adult and youth students annually. Membership with The Crucible represents a commitment to the creative habit. Members receive valuable benefits, such as discounts on tuition and events, early registration privileges, and access to the CREATE program.
Donors & Supporters
As a 501(c)(3), donations are an integral part of our success. All gifts, regardless of size, are important in helping us provide youth and adult scholarships and free programs for local public schools. Donor support is critical to our mission of inspiring a new generation of fine and industrial artists to enrich the community: $25 buys safety equipment for a student and $1,000 sponsors a field trip for 60 young people.
Board & Advisors
Our Board of Directors and Advisory Council provide valuable insight and critical feedback on the current operations and future vision of The Crucible. The Board and Council—a group with diverse perspectives and experience—lend expertise in critical areas of artistry, non-profit operations, business, technology, community relations, and more.
