Registration, Pricing, & Discounts
The Crucible is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts school. We are funded through a combination of grants, donations, studio rental fees, workshops, fabrication projects, non-class programming, and revenue from youth and adult classes. We do our best to hold down the cost of classes, but must meet basic overhead costs including fuel & electricity, our mortgage, insurance, and administrative overhead. The price of a class includes tuition, studio fees and a non-refundable $50 registration fee.
- Tuition – This is the cost of the educational experience of the class – the time and planning by faculty and staff and your creative experience as a student.
- Studio Fees – Set costs we cannot defray for the use of the Crucible’s studios such as gas, electricity, and tools. We provide all materials for classes, with the exception of a handful as noted in the catalog.
- Registration Fee – Class costs includes a non-refundable registration fee of $50.
Unless specified, all materials you need to learn the skills in class will be provided. If you want to make a larger project or use specific materials, there may be additional costs.
A helpful way to think about cost: divide the tuition by the number of hours. For instance, Blacksmithing I with Lab tuition is $500, and it meets for 30 hours total. That’s $16.67 per hour, of if you include the studio fees, $20 per hour total. A great value considering you’ll learn a new artform and go home with some hand-made pieces.
We accept Visa, MasterCard, or American Express online, over the phone, or in person or online. You may pay by check or cash during business hours in our registration office. Do not send cash in the mail. Please be prepared to make full payment upon registering. We are unable to hold partially paid slots. There is a $35 charge for returned checks.
The Crucible has the right to cancel any class for any reason. In some cases, classes are cancelled due to low enrollment. In the event that The Crucible cancels your class, you will be notified by phone or email and you will receive a full refund, or you may choose to transfer to another class if space is available, or hold a credit on account for future use.
Students who withdraw from a class at least seven days prior to the first scheduled session of a class will receive a full refund, less the non-refundable $50 registration fee. No portion of tuition will be refunded or transferred if a withdrawal is made less than seven days before the class start date. There are no exceptions.
To withdraw from a class call (510) 444-0919, Monday – Thursday, 10am – 6pm, or Friday, 10am – 2pm, and you will receive a confirmation code for your withdrawal.
Students wishing to transfer must first withdraw from the class they are signed up for at least seven days prior to the class start date, adhering to the withdrawal policy above. Any refund or credit due after withdrawal can be applied to enrollment in a different class.
There are no refunds, transfers, make-ups, or deferments for missed classes.
The Crucible reserves funds to provide scholarships to under-resourced youth who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in Crucible classes and programs. Our pricing structure allows us to impact our community for the better.
We are a heavily volunteer-driven organization and have an active program that allows volunteers to earn credit toward discounts on class tuition.
Discounts apply only to the tuition portion of the class cost. Discount cannot be applied retroactively. There is limited space for discounted tuition available in each class. Discounts cannot be combined with any other offers, volunteer/intern hours, or coupons. Not good for Family Fun Weekends, Tasters, Youth Camps, Youth Classes, Labs, or CREATE access.
Crucible members automatically receive early registration privileges and a 10% discount on tuition.
The Crucible partners with arts, education, nonprofits, and community groups to provide discounted pricing and special offers for a limited number of classes throughout the year. Community partner discounts are available for:
- Current full-time college students
- Current, active K-12, undergraduate and graduate teachers and instructors
- Veterans and active military
- Active firefighters and police officers
- City of Oakland employees
- Seniors age 65+ that are California residents
Community partner discounts are non-transferable and limited to one discount per community member per quarter. Confirm your eligibility for these discounts and learn more about the classes that are available with our registrar in person or by phone at (510) 444-0919 x 103. Proof of active status in California is required at time of registration.
The Crucible strives to maintain a safe and healthy environment, yet some chemicals, particulates, and processes may not be suitable for students with a medical condition, who are pregnant, or who have a sensitivity to light or other specific triggers. Please disclose any medical conditions to the registrar and discuss your concerns before enrolling in a course.
The Crucible creates a safe space for participants’ physical and emotional well-being. Students are expected to conduct themselves with respect for individuals, the organization, and the facility at all times. Students will review Studio Rules and Group Agreements of The Crucible during their first class. The director reserves the right to enforce these rules, and anyone in violation will be subject to consequences including, but not limited to, immediate dismissal from classes without refund.
