From July 29 to August 5, 2016, famed sculptors and visiting artists Rachel David of New Orleans and Ben Beemes of Tasmania led a class in forging and fabricating a steel sculpture. The team had the opportunity to learn blacksmithing while contributing to a public art piece.

Students developed foundational skills in blacksmithing and welding, comparable to The Crucible’s Blacksmithing I course. They explored tapering, upsetting, punching, hot cutting, team striking, and use of the power hammer and screw and hydraulic presses. Everyone agreed that it was a great experience to create an original sculpture with the masters, from start to finish!

The sculpture was installed at The Crucible in February 2017.
