Studio Rules

In order to provide everyone at The Crucible with a safe and enjoyable experience, we request that you acquaint yourself with and adhere to the following rules and policies for Crucible studio use.

Shop Access

The “shop” indicates the studio areas outside of the rental spaces, but does not include the tool room.

Shop Hours

Monday – Friday: 10 am – 10 pm
Saturday – Sunday: 10 am – 6 pm

Clothing

To participate in classes at The Crucible you are required to dress smart and safe. You’ll need to wear closed-toe, leather shoes, long pants, non-synthetic clothing and have long hair pulled back. Be careful that you do not wear anything too baggy that might be caught on something or singe.

Students

During class and lab time students have access only to the areas they are enrolled in.
Student materials should be stored in designated areas, and may only be stored during the duration of the class. All materials that remain in The Crucible after the class has ended become property of The Crucible.

Studio Renters

Renters have access during Shop Hours to any area in which they have first been checked out, and must give priority to scheduled classes.

Renters have access to the private studio area 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. This includes access to bathrooms & shop sink. Please use entrance in the gated parking lot.

Tool Room Access

Crucible staff, and volunteers/interns who are clocked in, have access to the Tool Room. Any faculty or students needing tools should check them out at the Tool Room window.

No overnight tool checkouts. All tools must be returned by 9:45 PM weekdays, 5:45 PM weekends.

All artists using our facilities are responsible for supplying their own consumable materials (steel, wood, fasteners, excessive grinding discs, glue, etc.).

Faculty Shop Access

Faculty have access to the classroom studio that they teach in, or are certified to work in, during normal shop hours. They may work to prepare for classes, improve the classroom facility, or work on personal projects (without excessive use of expendables). Faculty cannot work on side jobs or outside contracts without FIRST filling out a “Studio Use Agreement” form with the Director of Studio Operations. Once the Executive Director has approved the form, fees have been assessed, and a schedule determined, the job can begin.

Priority must first be given to scheduled classes.

Area Heads Shop Access

Area Heads have access to the classroom studio that they teach in, or are certified to work in, during Mon- Thurs., 10AM-10PM and Sat/Sun 10AM-6PM. They may work to prepare for classes, improve the classroom facility, or work on personal projects (without excessive use of expendables). Area Heads cannot work on side jobs or outside contracts without FIRST filling out a “Studio Use Agreement” form with the Director of Studio Operations. This policy is meant to address studio renters who wish to employ outside help on projects being done in The Crucible studio facility.

Studio renters can have visitors to their private spaces at any time, and to the general Crucible facility during Studio Hours. They can also have limited outside help to unload and load materials and perform other tasks as secondary assistants, but cannot have outside individuals using The Crucible studio facility for fabrication.
