We're looking for motivated individuals who want to donate their skills and enthusiasm to assist us as our exciting non-profit facility evolves.

Volunteering Opportunities

Block Time Volunteers

Block Time volunteers commit to a regular shift of four or more hours per week at a regularly set schedule for a several week block.
We provide two categories of block time volunteer opportunities.  There is studio volunteering that involves the maintenance and physical development of our facility as well as overseeing the tool room.   We have a Do It Ourselves approach and welcome others with a similar disposition.  There is also office volunteering.  This could involve managing the front desk or assisting in one of our departments.

As a block-time volunteer, you'll work closely with a Crucible staff member who will supervise your involvement.  You will also get an inside’s perspective on how our progressive non-profit art school functions and contribute to our success.   Moreover, the hours you donate will be logged toward class discounts!

Special Event Volunteers

Events at The Crucible are dynamic, spectacular and not-to-be-missed. Our events could not be possible with out the help of hundreds of volunteers! Volunteer roles include greeting, youth activities, sales, set-up and clean-up.

This annual event schedule is:

- The Crucible’s Anniversary Event
January
- Spring Open House and Art Show April
- Fire Arts Festival
July
- Fall Community Open House
September
- Holiday Gifty Art Sale & Open House
December

Volunteer roles include security, fire safety (requires training), greeting, youth activities, bar, maintenance, ticket sales, set-up & clean-up, etc.   Volunteer hours for all events now accrue and can be redeemed for class discounts and membership at the standard rate outlined below.

Youth Program Volunteers

Field trips, youth camps, earn-a-bike class, bike fixathons, special youth workshops and open houses at The Crucible all need volunteers with a special interest in working with young people. Experience with children is desired.

The Crucible’s Youth Program mission is to provide youth with
high-quality, hands-on fine and industrial art making experiences that support learning across academic subject areas and learning styles. Our program is dedicated to promoting meaningful social relationships, self-awareness and skill building to help them develop into physically and emotionally healthy adults.

Volunteer responsibilities include helping students with their projects, assisting the instructor with set up and clean up, teaching bicycle mechanics, overseeing youth activities, greeting them at check-in, and escorting them in groups to watch studio demonstrations. Experience working in a studio environment is a plus!

Special Needs

If you have specialized training working with individuals with disabilities, please let us know.  We frequently have students that require assistance from trained individuals and The Crucible strives to make our educational programs open to everyone.

Volunteer Policies and Benefits

Baseline

10 volunteer hours are required before accrual toward benefits begins. After the initial 10 hours are accrued, hours accumulate toward the below benefits.

Option 1

Memberships:  25 accrued volunteer hours can be redeemed for a "Firecracker" level membership with associated benefits; or 50 accrued volunteer hours can be redeemed for a "Pyro" level membership with associated benefits.

Option 2

Discounts off Classes:  Volunteers receive 1% discount off tuition for each hour of volunteered. For example, 25 hours of volunteering = 25% off of a class tuition. A maximum discount of 50% can be applied toward classes.  The discount applies towards tuition, not material fees. Once volunteer hours are used towards a benefit, the accrued hours are cleared and new hours are logged towards a new benefit.

Set-up & Clean-up Incentive

During events we can use all the help we can get.  To add an incentive to helping with set-up and clean-up of events, we offer our 10% Incentive Shifts.  In exchange for volunteering for a 5-hour shift on a specific set-up or clean-up date, you will receive 10% off the tuition of a class!  This is twice the rate of normal volunteer discounts.  Moreover, these 10% discounts may be combined with volunteer hours to receive discounts greater than 50%.  For example, a volunteer with 45 eligible hours and two 10% coupons may receive 65% off tuition. The 10% discounts are entered in to the folio of the volunteer in our database.  Previously, they were paper coupons.

Additional Policies

Volunteers may redeem their volunteer hours when they wish as long as they comply with all regulations.  Volunteers are not eligible to register 30 days or more prior to the start of a class. Volunteers must register in person or over the phone to receive their discount from volunteer hours; registering online will not yield a volunteer discount. To reserve a place in a class, volunteers must pay the materials fee for the class.  Once volunteer hours are used towards a benefit, the accrued hours are cleared and new hours are logged toward a new benefit. The 10% Incentive Shifts can be combined with volunteer hours for volunteers who have already met their 10 hour initial accrual, or one may serve as a new volunteer’s 10 hour initial accrual.  If you received a 10% discount coupon from the earlier policy, it must be redeemed in person. Other promotional discounts cannot be combined with accrued volunteer hours.  Accrued hours may be combined with membership discounts.

Transfer of Volunteer

Volunteers can pre-arrange to donate their volunteer hours to the youth or adult scholarship pool or another specified individual.  Volunteers must complete the Transfer of Volunteer Hours form prior to actually volunteering the hours they wish to donate.
