Virtual Artist Talk: Turning Scrap Into Sculpture With Rob Nehring
Please join us Friday, June 5, for our next virtual artist talk with Crucible faculty member, Rob Nehring, of our Welding Department. Rob has been a part of The Crucible community since the early 2000s when he traveled from Chicago to take his first class. Since then, Rob has held all kinds of positions within our organization, from volunteer to Director of Programs. We’ll discuss Rob’s body of work and the importance of using recycled materials to create his sculptures.
This event is part of a series of virtual artist talks The Crucible will be hosting during our Covid-19 related closure. Please check back for information on future talks!

Meet The Artist:
Rob Nehring
Sculptor Rob Nehring has been involved with The Crucible since the early 2000s. He initially traveled cross-country from Chicago to take a glass casting class, but was reconnected with welding upon his arrival in the East Bay. As an undergraduate, Rob received his BFA for inter-arts which included studies in theater, dance, and sculpture—his first exposure to welding.
During his first months in California, Rob began filling his extra time as a Crucible volunteer. Since then, he’s held staff roles like Studio Manager and Director of Programs, and has been a member of our faculty for more than a decade, in which time he’s taught more than 50 classes.
As the sole proprietor of Rusty Noodle Studios, Rob creates his humorous welded sculptures using 99% recycled metals, letting the materials dictate what they will become and emphasizing the personalities of ordinary objects. Rob’s sculptures are in galleries and part of private collections throughout the US. Since 2015, he has donated a number of pieces to our annual Fire & Light Soirée and Art Auction, helping raise $12,400 for The Crucible’s arts programing.
