We Need Your Help Finding Youth Interested In Learning Basic Bike Mechanics
2.1.2021
We are excited to be restarting our Earn-A-Bike Program this February 16, as a newly designed 4-week program, running Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-6pm. The Crucible’s Bike Shop has been operating with new health and safety policies in place, successfully running multiple Bike Fix-A-Thons and Bike Maintenance classes for our local community.
During Earn-A-Bike, we will open up our Bike Shop for young folks ages 10-18, who are interested in learning the basics of bike mechanics and bike repair. To do so we need your help spreading the word! We still have five spots available in this free program and are prioritizing Oakland youth and applicants with economic need.
The Earn-A-Bike Program provides Oakland youth with hands-on experience in welding and bike mechanics. In this drop-in program, youth work with volunteer bike mechanics to fix donated bikes, repairing two bikes and keeping one. The other bike is sold to raise money to support our Bike Program.
Do you know an OUSD teacher who can nominate one of their students to participate in this program? Do you know a young person who wants to rebuild a bike from the ground up? Encourage them to apply using our scholarship form which can be found below.
There isn’t any other opportunity like this one—this is really about making and painting and customizing bicycles. I want to come back to fix up more bikes in the future—I like to learn about this stuff!
