Youth and Adult Scholarships

The Crucible offers full and partial scholarships for youth and adults who would otherwise not be able to participate in classes or camps. Each year, we offer over $100,000 in youth and adult scholarships.

Scholarships for BIPOC and low-income students from Oakland

Scholarships are funded by The Crucible’s general funds, foundation grants, and individual donations. Scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, based on availability and the criteria below. Scholarship applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Criteria

The Crucible prioritizes scholarship awards to low-income households, youth and adults living and/or attending school in West Oakland or the East Bay, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth and families.

Low-income BIPOC youth and adults and those who need financial support to attend are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are awarded to youth and adults based on the strength of their applications, financial need, and class availability.

Incomplete applications will not be processed. Youth students must be ages 8-17, and if awarded a scholarship will be placed into age-appropriate classes. Requests for specific sessions and classes are not guaranteed.

Instructions

Please completely fill out the scholarship application form, and submit your application no later than three weeks prior to your class start date.

Applications are reviewed in the order that they are received. If you are granted a scholarship, you will be notified by email or phone at least one week prior to the class start date. These awards are designed for adults and families with financial need and are allocated based on availability of funds and class space. Spaces are limited.

The Crucible reserves the right to cancel scholarships at any time for any reason.

Special Scholarship Fund for Oakland-Based People of Color

The Raphael Allen Fund

Throughout his life, Raphael was dedicated to facilitating interpretive engagement with nature and history, by researching and including the stories of under-represented people in his tours, writings, and talks. His happy face was often seen at The Crucible, and one that left us much too soon. In his honor, the Raphael Allen Fund provides full and partial adult scholarships to Crucible classes for people of color who live in Oakland and need financial support to attend.
